Sincere Store and the Retail Magnate of Hong Kong
Having a humble beginning didn’t stop Ma Ying Piu from becoming a self-made retail magnate. Determined to financially support Sun Yet-sen’s (Founder of modern China) vision to overthrow the Qing Dynasty, Ma started the first Chinese-owned department store, “Sincere”, in Hong Kong in 1900. He revolutionized how people shopped at the time by implementing a no-haggle pricing policy and by hiring women as salespeople. With tremendous success, he strengthened the competitiveness of Chinese-funded enterprises and shouldered the social responsibility to educate and train Hong Kongers the way of doing business.
